Located in the Crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields, The Apse is a circular recess and an original feature of this iconic church designed by architect James Gibbs. Working with craftspeople from around Britain, St Martin-in-the-Fields has transformed The Apse to create a new sumptuous space for private dining and small group gatherings.
The Apse Team
Allyson Hargreaves, Executive Director commissioned Gay Mill of The Design Net to design the Apse interior and source suppliers and manufacturers. The Design Net brings together the traditions and skills of handmade cabinet making and upholstery to meet the demands of a wide range of clients in retail and catering. Like St Martin’s The Design Net adheres to a comprehensive environmental policy in using sustainable materials and processes. The Design Net created four beautiful curved leather sofas connected by hand crafted occasional tables. In front of each sofa is a curved table which is height adjustable for sit-down dinners or casual drinks.
For the furnishings designer Gay Mill and the St Martin’s team chose Bute Fabrics and Bridge of Weir Leather Company for their beautiful designs and compatibility to the ethos of St Martin’s.
Bute Fabrics was established in 1947 to provide employment for servicemen and servicewomen returning to the island following the Second World War. This contemporary fabric designer and manufacturer remains a family firm based on the Isle of Bute, off the west coast of Scotland. With St Martin’s history of opening its doors to service men and women during the First World War which led to the development of our long term commitment to the support of homeless people the partnership with Bute Fabrics held a strong resonance.
The Apse upholstery leather was provided by family firm Bridge of Weir Leather Company. Founded in Scotland in 1905, the company benefits from the skills of seven generations of family leather manufacture as well as the local prime beef herds for skins and a plentiful supply of soft, pure water. Another great fit for St Martin’s environmental and sustainability policies to work with UK suppliers in order to minimise transport miles and maximise local resources and skills.
